Introduction to Mac OS X is a one-day preliminary course for those new to Mac OS X who need to prepare for the Mac OS X Support Essentials course, or other technical Mac OS X training courses. This course focuses on getting to know the foundations of Mac OS X, with topics ranging from efficient window and application management to system customization. You’ll also learn how to configure user accounts and manage files.
In addition to the instructional content provided during the hands-on portion of the class, attendees receive a copy the book, Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard, by Robin Williams.
Who Should Attend
This class is designed for those new to the Mac OS X platform who need to obtain the skills to support other Mac OS X users. Mac OS X Server Essentials is a four-day course designed to give technical coordinators and entry-level system administrators the skills, tools, and knowledge to implement and maintain a network that uses Mac OS X Server. Students learn how to install and configure Mac OS X Server to provide network-based services, such as file sharing, authentication, and printing. Tools for efficiently managing and deploying Mac OS X and software updates are also covered. The course is a combination of lectures and hands-on case study exercises that provide practical real-world experience.

The emphasis of the class will be on the equivalent computer structures in the Macintosh and Windows environments. iTunes is Apple’s master hub program for music, podcasts, and video, as well as iPod, iPhone, and iPad applications. GarageBand is Apple’s introductory digital music production program. The iTunes portion of the class pushes beyond the simplest functions of iTunes to explore music collection management, CD production, broadcasting music, podcasts and podcast subscriptions. The GarageBand portion of the class will focus on basic digital music production for the novice and compatibility of the resulting music files.

Topics include photo organization, export as files, web-ready output, slideshow and book production, file conversion and compatibility. The iWeb portion of the class focuses on using Apple’s template based software for producing an informative web presence in minimal time on Apple’s MobileMe service or independent web hosts.

This class focuses on the novice user making a first video or video DVD. Topics include video camera choices, downloading video files and editing video clips for finished production in iDVD.

For the budget conscious small business or home office user, Apple’s iWork ensemble provides a cost effective, compatible alternative to Microsoft Office for Macintosh. Pages is Apple’s word processing and page layout program. Numbers is Apple’s spreadsheet and charting application, and Keynote is Apple’s presentation software. They answer the need for the small business and home business user for MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint, respectively. The emphasis of the class will be on using these highly capable programs to their fullest for your business needs. Topics will include formatting, functions, and compatibility with other software. Particular attention will be given to when a transition to Microsoft Office might be necessary or advisable.

This class focuses on setting up applications such as MS Office for Macintosh, Adobe Creative Suite, Quicken, Firefox, Google Earth, etc. Topics include file compatibility, printing considerations, font usage, and updates/upgrades.
